See Small Specs On Your Paint? Rough Texture? It’s Paint Overspray.
When you notice small colored specks on your vehicle’s paint or feel a rough texture when running your hand over the surface, it’s likely caused by tiny paint particles that have settled on your car.
This often occurs near construction sites or when someone is painting outdoors, and wind carries a fine layer of paint particles onto your vehicle.
Chances are, it’s not just on the paint but also on your glass, trim, wheels, and more. It’s frustrating to see and even more so to clean off.
However, it’s worth noting that these small specks and rough texture could also be caused by other types of surface contaminants.
Don’t Do More Harm Than Good To Your Paint
Scrubbing or rubbing your paint aggressively with a towel, plastic razor, or brush will only result in swirls and scratches.
We see this happen repeatedly, and it ends up adding extra work to the job. Now we have two issues to address:
First, removing the overspray. This can be easy or quite challenging, depending on the type of paint and the surface it’s on (whether trim, wheels, paint, or glass).
Even with safe removal techniques, there’s often minor marring to the paint, which will require a light polish to correct.
However, if you’ve scratched the paint by being too aggressive, we’ll need to perform a more extensive paint correction to remove the deeper swirls and scratches you’ve created.
Our Overspray Removal Process:
- 1
Wash the vehicle; including wheels, tires, and fenders
- 4
Light polish to remove any light marring, swirls, or scratches
- 2
Start the removal process with various tools and products; clay bar and adhesive remover
- 5
Add spray wax for shine and protection
- 3
Wipe down the affected areas to remove any chemical residue
- 6
Dress tires with a water-based, no-sling dressing
This service alone is enough to restore your paint to its original condition, or even better in some cases. However, if you want to further enhance your vehicle’s overall appearance, adding a Exterior Detail or Paint Correction service will do the trick.

Paint Overspray FAQ
Do you come to me?
For this type of service, we require you to bring your vehicle to our shop in Houston. Removing paint overspray can be a tedious task, especially depending on the type of overspray. Additionally, the Houston heat makes it even more challenging, as hot panels and quick-drying chemicals complicate the job.
I tried claying the paint, and it’s still there. What now?
Clay bar treatments are effective for removing surface contaminants, and we use them in every Wash and Wax service. However, with overspray, the process is different. The overspray needs to be “pulled” off in a specific way. You could spend more time claying, but the results may not be ideal, as this is a slow and time-consuming task.
Can you remove overspray from plastic, wheels, and glass?
In most cases, yes. We can remove overspray from surfaces like glass, wheels, trim, and fenders. That said, we can’t always guarantee 100% removal. We follow our detailing process, but some surfaces may be more difficult to work with than others, particularly based on the type of paint that landed on your vehicle.
Can a rubbing compound remove the overspray?
A rubbing compound might remove a small amount of overspray, but overall, it won’t make much difference. You can try working the product into the surface with a towel, but you’re unlikely to see significant improvement.
